Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel believes Timo Werner’s performance against Southampton in the Premier League on Saturday made a vital message.
Chelsea thrashed Southampton 6-0, rebounding from a 4-1 heavy setback to Brentford last weekend and a 3-1 Champions League loss to Real Madrid in midweek.
Tuchel claimed Werner ‘must’ to’make a statement and establish he remains a ‘essential player’ at the club by scoring twice against Southampton.
Marcos Alonso, Mason Mount, and Kai Havertz each scored a goal.
In recent weeks, Werner has been linked with a move away from Chelsea, and Tuchel emphasized that the German striker must’make a statement’ against Southampton.
“As a result, he[Werner] was tasked with delivering, honestly.” Everything was in place for him to produce and make a message that he had not given up, that he was still a vital member of this club and group. Tuchel said in his post-match press conference, “And he did.”
“It was required, and it was extremely good and strong.”
The Blues’ next voyage will be to Spain, namely Santiago Bernabeu. In the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final, they will face Real Madrid.
Chelsea will try to recover from a 3-1 deficit against Real Madrid on Tuesday in Madrid.
