Shirley Igwe, a famous actress in Nollywood, has talked about how women’s success is often tied to men. She also spoke about how she wants to join her already active friends in Nigerian politics.

Remember that some Nigerians criticized Funke Akindele and Tonto Dikeh for going into politics even though their marriages had ended badly.

Akindele is the Peoples Democratic Party’s candidate for deputy governor in Lagos State, and Dikeh is the African Democratic Party’s candidate for deputy governor in Rivers State.

She told Punch, in response to a question about whether she plans to run for political office now or in the future:

“Why not, sure? If my husband lets me, I will (I will run for political office). We both need to agree on how to handle the situation.”

Igwe also told women not to get down on themselves if their money comes from men. She told me:

“It’s not just actresses whose hard work and success are tied to men; it happens in almost every field. That’s what everyone else does. But that shouldn’t stop women who try to work hard.”

Shirley Igwe also slammed those who tell a woman whose marriage didn’t work out can’t be a good leader. She told me:

“I don’t want to get involved in a sensitive matter like this. I don’t know what to say to people who talk badly about others.

“But people who believe the saying “If you can build a house, you can build a nation” should remember that a house is not a country. There are two separate places. Politics determine how a country is run, but politics can never win at home. To keep a home, you need more than just politics.”

When asked if she thinks women can play essential roles in politics, she said:

“I don’t think women have ever had to take a back seat. On the contrary, women have power, and when they know how to use it, it will help them a lot.
